Aileen Rodriguez
Aileen Rodriguez has been undergoing home-based therapy since July 2009 up to the present under CBR programme in Eastern Samar, the Philippines. The village health worker, trained by Terre des Hommes Netherlands for rehabilitation skills, undergoes and supervises the therapy. Aileen and her parents were taught of the exercises she had to do every day. Slowly, her balance improved and from clutching onto the post for support so that she can be able to stand, she can now stand with the aid of a stick.
Countries
Terre des Hommes Netherlands has been working in Southeast Asia since 1984. Our regional office in Jakarta covers five Southeast Asian countries: Indonesia, Cambodia, the Philippines, Thailand and Lao People's Democratic Republic (Lao PDR). Our target group is destitute children in general, with special attention given to children living in extreme circumstances, such as child labourers, child victims of trafficking and prostitution, children with HIV/Aids, abused children and children with disabilities.
-
Cambodia
The main target Terre des Hommes Netherlands working in Cambodia is vulnerable children; children with disabilities, exploited, street and poor children, malnourished, infected with diseases, and youth.
-
Indonesia
It was found 14.15% (32.53 millions) of the total population in Indonesia live under this overall poverty line, of which 17.35% of them reside in rural areas and 10.72% in urban areas. With the lack of access to quality education, health and nutrition services, children do not grow optimally.
-
Thailand
Thailand, out of all the countries receiving Terre des Hommes Netherlands’ assistance, remains to be the most developed country and as such is phased with the problem of many illegal immigrants from neighbouring countries (Lao PDR, Myanmar and Cambodia).
-
Philippines
The Philippines is one of the popular destinations for commercial sex tourism, which puts hundreds and thousands of Filipino children in danger. Department of Tourism, through its Child Wise Tourism Programme, strengthened its effort to prevent further child exploitation (trafficking, prostitution, and pornography).
Our strategy and approach are related to the realisation of various international agreements and conventions, such as the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC), International Labour Organisation (ILO) Conventions No. 138 and 182, and the Millennium Development Goals. Terre des Hommes Netherlands’ support is utilised in three ways: direct assistance, community awareness, and lobbying and advocacy for legislation and law enforcement. Terre des Hommes Netherlands provides technical assistance to local partners in the form of capacity building, training, exposure and exchange programmes.
