Aileen Rodriguez

Aileen Rodriguez has been undergoing home-based therapy since July 2009 up to the present under CBR programme in Eastern Samar, the Philippines. The village health worker, trained by Terre des Hommes Netherlands for rehabilitation skills, undergoes and supervises the therapy. Aileen and her parents were taught of the exercises she had to do every day. Slowly, her balance improved and from clutching onto the post for support so that she can be able to stand, she can now stand with the aid of a stick.

Originally the clinic was set up to provide health services for Burmese migrants living in Maesot.  The services then expanded to reach Burmese refugees living inside of 7 biggest camps along Myawaddi River, and later on also serving Burmese Internally displaced persons (IDPs) inside Burma who live in the hill side through its back pack team.

During its operation more than 10 health professionals who work for the team were killed by military junta. In 1994 the clinic set up a satellite in Pa Pun District Karen State. The clinic is named: Pha Hite, delivering services for mostly Karen people living in the district with basic health services. MTC is acknowledged by the Thai authority in Maesot, therefore they are able to refer difficult cases to the district hospital. The local district health office also provides free vaccination for under-five children seeking the service in MTC. It is documented by MTC that in the past 3 years number of patients who illegally cross the border is increasing due to worse services available inside Burma.

In the first semester of 2009 the number was double from a year before.  It is in line with the increase number of un-accompanied children sent by their parents to Thailand for a better living.  It is projected that the situation will not get better anytime soon. In response to unstable situation inside Burma which led to shortage of health professional, MTC is opening course for nurse and midwifes. They received support from the government of Thailand by providing teachers for it.
