Aileen Rodriguez
Aileen Rodriguez has been undergoing home-based therapy since July 2009 up to the present under CBR programme in Eastern Samar, the Philippines. The village health worker, trained by Terre des Hommes Netherlands for rehabilitation skills, undergoes and supervises the therapy. Aileen and her parents were taught of the exercises she had to do every day. Slowly, her balance improved and from clutching onto the post for support so that she can be able to stand, she can now stand with the aid of a stick.
Scholarship for Poor Children
Buddhism for Development (BFD) supports three categories of children in Cambodia, namely children with HIV/Aids, children from ethnic minorities and vulnerable children of low socio-economic status. Focused on the provinces of Battambang, Siem Reap and Preah Vihear, BFD runs a project that aims to ensure disadvantaged children receive an education. A total of 450 children have been enrolled in school with the support of the project.
The scholarship project provides school equipment and a transportation allowance for the children, and encourages them to regularly attend school. The project also provides second-hand bicycles so the students can cycle to school.
All the children are happy when they can come to school each day. BFD assists these children with additional training based on their needs. This training is also used as a means to monitor the children’s school attendance.
As part of the project, BFD provides parents of the children with training in socio-economic development activities. This is to ensure the parents will be able to finance their children’s needs later on. So far, 40 families have used the knowledge they gained from the training to start small businesses, such as poultry farming and vegetable gardening.
