Working children
13 year old Nandini, seen in the picture above, never went to school. She works as a weaver to supplement her family's income. Thanks to local project partner Society for Human Education (SHE) Nandini attends non formal education classes for out-of-school children. Non formal education provides working children the opportunity to study at a convenient place, pace and time. Nandini is studying for her 10th standard diploma.
Matara District Development Project
This project aims to improve the social and economic living conditions of deprived families of fisher communities in the Matara district. In this district the SFFL identified problems in the health, education and socio-economic sector. Hospitals and clinics are understaffed, Ministry of Health doesn't reach remote areas and preventive health care is not well developed. A major health issue is malnutrition of pregnant women and children. In terms of education early childhood, primary and secondary education is poor in quality of teachers and in physical environment. Vocational training opportunities for youth are scares. The socio-economic situation of small scale fishers is poor, due to seasonal work. Unemployment rates are high, especially among women and youth.
The project addresses the above mentioned problems through a comprehensive development approach. Health problems are addressed by village health committees that mobilise the Ministry of Health and make sure pregnant women and mothers receive pre natal and post natal care. Through early childhood development centres small children have access to quality education and a nutritious meal to address problems of malnutrition. School age children are member of children clubs where they have time to play and receive help with their homework. Women participate in saving and credit groups and have access to skill training.
