Working children
13 year old Nandini, seen in the picture above, never went to school. She works as a weaver to supplement her family's income. Thanks to local project partner Society for Human Education (SHE) Nandini attends non formal education classes for out-of-school children. Non formal education provides working children the opportunity to study at a convenient place, pace and time. Nandini is studying for her 10th standard diploma.
Exploitation
BangladeshIn Bangladesh violence, including acid attacks, sexual abuse, trafficking and exploitation of children continues to hamper the realization of children's rights. Sexual abuse of children and adolescent girls is a significant problem, but remains largely hidden due to the stigma attached to the victims of such offences. Children of sex workers, slum dwellers, refugees, tribal groups and those living in remote and inaccessible areas, orphans, street children, are particularly vulnerable. There is little awareness among the general public and employers on the rights of the children in Bangladesh.
In Bangladesh Terre des Hommes Netherlands focuses its support on awareness through advocacy and lobbying on child trafficking and the worst forms of child labour, on services for exploited children and services for vulnerable children to prevent them from exploitation.
India
In India children's rights are regularly violated in many ways. Due to abject poverty, discrimination, social exclusion and a lack of quality education many children in India have to work, are trafficked or are victim of sexual exploitation and other forms of violence and abuse. India has the largest number of child labourers under the age of 14 in the world, an estimated 12.6 million children are engaged in hazardous jobs. It also has the largest population of street children. Street children suffer from destitution, neglect, abuse and exploitation. It is estimated that in urban areas alone there are 11 million children on the streets. Street girls are extremely vulnerable to sexual abuse.
In India Terre des Hommes Netherlands focuses its support on services for exploited and vulnerable children. This includes safe and protected shelter for exploited girls and rehabilitation of Devadasi (temple prostitutes) and their children.
Sri Lanka
In Sri Lanka many children face domestic violence, physical and sexual abuse more often than not within the family. It is a big invisible problem in Sri Lanka, which is not openly discussed in society. Many children are abandoned and neglected due to family poverty situation. In many cases they don't have anywhere to go or anything to do and spend their time on the streets. Unfortunately, there is no proper mechanism in place to protect the rights of children.
In Sri Lanka Terre des Hommes Netherlands focuses its support on safe temporary homes where children receive protection and care and prevention of child abuse through awareness raising.
