Working children
13 year old Nandini, seen in the picture above, never went to school. She works as a weaver to supplement her family's income. Thanks to local project partner Society for Human Education (SHE) Nandini attends non formal education classes for out-of-school children. Non formal education provides working children the opportunity to study at a convenient place, pace and time. Nandini is studying for her 10th standard diploma.
Foundation stone for new vocational training institute in Bangladesh
On the 22nd of June Mr. Lei Brouns, Regional Director for South Asia, and Mr. Hans Guijt, Head of Programmes had the honour to put the first foundation stone of the new vocational training building of our partner Society for Social Service (SSS). With support from Terre des Hommes Netherlands SSS establishes a Technical and Vocational Education and Training Centre in Tangail district, Bangladesh, to provide quality technical and vocational training for disadvantaged youth.
When the construction of the building is finished, five trades are offered: mechanical, welding, electronics, air-condition and refrigeration, plumbing and pipe fitting. English language and computer training are compulsory for all trades. The trades give youth the opportunity to find skilled employment in or even outside Bangladesh.
Most of the beneficiaries of this project are youth from disadvantaged families who are group members of the SSS poverty alleviation programme. They are either school drop outs or youth who cannot afford to continue further education. Children of sex workers and domestic child workers who are currently supported by Terre des Hommes Netherlands funded projects are also included and there is provision for girls in certain trades.
About Society for Social Service (SSS)
Established in 1986 SSS aims to improve the socio-economic conditions of the underprivileged and indigent people with special attention to women and children. SSS works towards this aim through various programmes that include saving and credit services, income generating activities, awareness raising, health care for women and children, adult literacy, children's education, water and sanitation and disaster prevention and management. Through its successful microcredit programme SSS is able to fund a large part of its own projects.
Terre des Hommes supports SSS since 1999.
