The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights recently held a hearing on various human rights violations. The obstacles regarding access to justice for victims of sexual violence in Bolivia were discussed. The country has an alarmingly high number of young victims. They lack the protection and assistance which they are entitled to, according to a report that was presented to the Commission.

Terre des Hommes has, together with its alliance partner Stichting Kinderpostzegels, started three projects in Ethiopia to counter child trafficking and sexual exploitation. By sending vulnerable children to school, child trafficking is prevented. The parents also receive socio-economical support to increase their income. Furthermore, children who are being exploited in the sex industry or who are at risk, will be liberated and reunited with their families. In total this is about direct help to hundreds of children and families and 10.000 people will be made aware of the risks.

A 38-year-old sailing instructor who was convicted in the Netherlands in 2004 for sexual abuse of a minor boy was recently arrested in Cambodia on suspicion of similar offenses. Terre des Hommes’ partnerorganisation APLE contributed significantly in collecting evidence. A Dutch crime program reported about this case which has been watched by well over a million people. Terre des Hommes-director Albert Jaap van Santbrink was being interviewed and emphasized a stronger role of the Dutch government in the prosecution of Dutch pedophiles abroad.

The heaviest rains in almost one hundred years hit Sri Lanka from 26 December 2010 onwards, causing devastating floods and landslides throughout the country. The floods followed two cycles of flash flooding in the capital city of Colombo on 10 November and in the northern districts from late November onwards that put many of the conflict-affected returnees in serious difficulties. This series of extensive and devastating floods, due to record rainfall levels since November, have cumulatively stretched coping strategies and available resources to the brink of exhaustion.
