This is Siti
She is 10 years old and up till last year, she worked on a garbage dump in Jakarta, Indonesia. Every day, she looked for recyclable materials such as plastic bottles to make some money. Terre des Hommes is committed to stop this kind of child exploitation. Together with a local partner, Terre des Hommes helps children like Siti to go back to school. Young people are given the opportunity to follow vocational training which gives them a chance of a better future. Parents receive information about the importance of education. For Siti, the support of Terre des Hommes has helped out a lot: instead of working at a garbage dump, she’s now working on a promising future at school.
Socio-economic development
Micro-credit loans are the perfect way for many poor people in developing countries to break free from the vicious cycle of poverty. By providing small loans, Terre des Hommes makes it possible for people to open their own little shop or restaurant. The family’s income increases as a result, eliminating the need for children to work and allowing them to go to school.
In the Rachana cow support programme, Cambodian families receive a cow for free. As a result, they can farm the rice fields more effectively, and the children get healthy milk to drink. Thanks to the Rachana programme supported by Terre des Hommes, the life of Nget Sopeap from the Takeo province has improved enormously. For years, she and her seven children worked in their rice field, which constantly yielded insufficient crops. The family lived in poverty as a result. In 2008, Nget became a member of the farmers’ association and received a cow. The children drink cow’s milk and are much healthier, and the cow manure has significantly improved the fertility of their field. The rice harvest now gives the family food for at least ten months, where it once produced only enough for five months at most.
