Uzima Air Medical Services
Uzima Air Medical Services operates a six-seater aircraft to back-up medical services in Turkana district (Kenya) in cooperation with the Diocese of Lodwar Medical Department, the Lodwar District Hospital and other health service providers in the district to improve local access to medical and specialised services as needed.
Turkana district is the largest single district in Kenya in terms of size at 77,000 km2. This makes it almost twice the size of the Netherlands (40,844km2). The district is one of Kenya's ASAL (Arid and Semi-Arid Lands) districts. It is very hot (around 40 degrees) and rainfall is scarce. The environment is very harsh as hardly anything grows. The climate conditions lead to frequent drought, famine, cattle raids and counter raids and have made the people of the district impoverished.
The dry, hot, sandy and windy conditions have its effects on the health status of the community. This is worsened by the remoteness of some of the areas where some people live. The district is expansive and many places have no roads. This has contributed to poor coverage of health services for instance immunisation of children and pre-and post natal care for mothers.
Uzima Air Medical Service is a Terre des Hommes ‘own' programme. The ultimate purpose of the programme is to work in partnership with the health service stakeholders in the Turkana district in order to improve access to medical services for the people and children of the district. The major component of the programme is the Cessna six-seater aeroplane that is made available to the Turkana health service providers. The Cessna belongs to Terre des Hommes Netherlands. Terre des Hommes Netherlands meets all costs of flying, maintenance and safe guarding the plane as a contribution to the improvement of the health services in the Turkana district. The Cessna service is integrated into the health programme in order to facilitate provision of regular health services to the remote areas of the district. The plane facilitates easy and fast transport of (specialist and local) medical personnel, supplies, equipment and patients to/from the various health centres and hospitals as the need may be.
