Support to AIDS orphans
Community Alive offers education, health, food and psycho-social support to AIDS orphans and people living with AIDS (PLWA) in Musoma town, Tanzania.
Musoma is located on the shores of Lake Victoria, in the Mara region, which is among the poorest regions of Tanzania. The population engages mostly in subsistence farming, however, soils are poor and rainfall is low. This leads to many people being unable to meet even their basic needs.
HIV/AIDS is still one of the major challenges in Tanzania. Out of every eighteen Tanzanians, one is infected by the virus. The number of infections is even higher in the regions along the shores of Lake Victoria: there, one in every thirteen residents is infected. The number of AIDS orphans is rapidly growing, especially in the lake region. About 12-15% of all children in Mara region have lost one or both parents. Most of them end up in the custody of relatives, quite often aged grandparents. With the meagre resources of most households, the added burden of assisting AIDS orphans is a large social strain to the families and the community in general. In such scenarios, instead of the children obtaining support to continue with school, they become school drop outs and bread earners to support their grandparents and younger siblings.
Community Alive supports AIDS orphans with their education, and with tuition, health care and a balanced diet. Every Saturday the children meet at the Community Alive creative learning centre for group counselling, games, sports and lunch. In addition, Community Alive conducts home and school visits to monitor the wellbeing of the children.
