Social Impact Award for Nairobits

The Anita Borg Institute for Women and Technology has awarded Anne Ikiara of our partner Nairobits with the 2011 Anita Borg Social Impact Award. This award honours an individual or team who has caused technology to have a positive impact on the lives of women and society.

Anne Ikiara is the general manager of Nairobits, dealing with youth and women empowerment through Information Communication Technology (ICT). Anne has enabled more than 6,000 women and girls from urban poor settlements across the African region to gain ICT skills that have improved their lives economically, socially-culturally and politically. Most notable is the entry of women and girls from disadvantaged communities to the formal ICT economy.

To further spread this successful concept, Nairobits is replicating the concept across the African region giving African women significant stake in the ICT arena. Terre des Hommes Netherlands is partnering with Nairobits in Mukuru slums, Nairobi (Kenya), as well as in Musoma (Tanzania) and Kampala (Uganda) where local ICT e-learning centres have been set up.

Although the projects commenced only in 2010 as of today 32 youth completed the ICT courses in Nairobi and Kampala out of which 8 managed to secure internships immediately; the remaining 24 are still in the interview stage. The 15 students in Musoma are in the last phase of their training, expected to graduate in December 2011.

Anne Ikiara has received the prestigious award on 11 November 2011 in Oregan, USA.
