Tanzania

Although key social indicators (net enrolment rate at primary schools and infant mortality) show significant progress for Tanzania, poverty remains high and economic change limited, particularly in rural areas. Poverty is highest among families that depend on agriculture (82% of the population). Children are supposed to contribute to the household in cash and/or in labour. Child orphans and children with disabilities constitute an especially vulnerable group, who face extreme poverty, exclusion and discrimination. A low level of knowledge on children's rights, child abuse and child development leaves children unprotected.
